The first 3 days in Karlovo

The reason I'm writing in english is that I don't have a, a, o, so I'm lazy and find it easier to just write in english for now :) Now I've been here in Bulgaria for three days, which isn't really all that long, but it feels like much longer. I have my own apartment, it's located quite near the Youth Centre where I work. The apartment is really small, for example I don't have a kitchen and not a wash mashine. But I do have a water boiler and a very, very small stove-look-alike-thing. I could make pasta if I wanted to, but probably not much more than that. The shower and toilet is combined sort of, so If you walk into the bathroom to use the toilet or the sink, you walk right into the shower. It works really well actually.

My first day here was Monday. I didn't do that much. Met up with my boss for a while, trying to get a phone card for me. Then in the evening I met up with some volonteers living in villages around Karlovo, and of course Roger who works at the same place and me (and who has become my life savior pretty much). He's from America like the other volonteers (Cindy, Joe and Sarah) and works here for the American peace corp. He's been here for two years, and is going home in a month. I suspect I'm kind of going to become his replacer.

On Tuesday we went hiking. Joe is apparantly crazy about going hiking, so what I thought was going to be a two hour walk turned out to be a six hour mountain hike. Is it necessary to say that my legs hurt like crazy after that and still do. Then I went home to sleep, living in a totally different country with a new language does make you a little more tired than when you're just at home. At least it makes me tired. In the evening I went out for dinner with Roger, it was really nice.

Yesterday was my first working day. Although I wouldn't call it working day, I didn't do a thing for the first to hours, then I went to a meeting of which I didn't understand a thing, then I copied some papers (yay). In the afternoon a got introduced to my mentor, Elena, who's 16. I went with her to her choir slash piano class, and after the class the teacher (who speaks zero english) asked me to play something. It was really fun, he spoke something about a christmas concert and asked me about my favourite singers and gave me the microphone and put on karaoke versions of different songs with crazy lyrics in half english. I like him he's cool. He seemed excited and asked me to come back if I wanted to play and sing some more and see what songs fit best for my voice and stuff =)

In general I like it here, people are friendly. But well of course I'm a little worried it's going to be a bit lonely after Roger has gone back home, since I live alone and everything. But I think it will work itself out somehow. Today I'm apparently going to some meeting in the municipality and then getting a presentation of what this organisation is actually working with (thank god). Hopefully I'll also meet with my bulgarian teacher, I have to learn this language really fast cause pretty much noone speaks english here. Right, my internet is going to be set up soon I hope.

  1. Hi love, nice to hear from you! I read your blog with great interest, keep up the good work with pictures and all! Good for you, with the music connection, take advantage of that to make new friends, so you won't be too lonely when Roger leaves Bulgaria...
